   I grew up in a fairly conservative family where
    manners were very important. I think that....
    the most important thing about being a modern
    gentleman and having good manners is actually
    knowing when things are appropriate. It is very
    appropriate to use different language to different
    people at different times. 
    TOM FORD I do not mean this in an egotistical
    way -but I am often complimented on my manners
    And I think a lot of people have forgotten any sense
    of measuring the situation and weighing up to treat
    someone. Tom Ford treats women very differently
    to men and still opens doors for them, carries their
    coats, making sure that they are walking on the 
    inside of the street. And that comes from the fact
    that traditionally women are more fragile than men.
    His advice to straight men is that if you want to 
    shag more girls open the doors for them, stand up
    when they come to the table, stand up when they 
    leave the table.You will be able to get anybody as
    no-one does that anymore he says.I do that at the
    dinner table and girls just flip-out, they kick their
    husbands"Get up! Look at him, why have't you got
    up? Look at him, look at his manners.Why don't 
    you do that for me? It is so seductive.
    But I am also an equal opportunity stander-upper
    so, if a male friend of mine comes to the table I'll
    stand up and, while I do it halfway s a joke, it's 
    also definitely an acknowledgement.
