Italy's Vogue Italia Franca Sozzani
is rather determined to bridge the
fashion gap between Africa and the
West with the re-branding of the
L'Uomo Vogue May/June edition
with her selection of interviewees
among them Didier Drogba, Lira
Kenyan prime minister Raila Odinga
using her power behind the project
as Editor-in chief for Vogue Italia
Vogue Italia is renown for using
black models in fashion spreads
and on the covers using the very
famous fashion photographer
Steven Meisel who adores shooting
and promoting black models.
It will be a tough job for Sozzani
as she is talent scouting in Africa
Sometimes when I see pictures
from the runways of Africa I think
'Who cares?' I'm looking for design
that can work on the global stage!!
Franca Sozzani
It was African model Liya Kebede
who first inspired the hugely
successful July 2008 all-black issue
of Vogue Italia 'At the time all the
models were Russian, then Liya
came out and she was like a queen.
Kebede appeared on the cover and
three other versions featured the
stunning Sessilee Lopez, Jourdan
Dunn Naomi Campbell.
The 62 year old Editor is quite
adamant to send out a loud and
clear message that African fashion
and beautiful black models does
exist and that Vogue Italia under
her reign will send out loud and clear
messages through strong fashion
images even though to some it
may be a bit controversial at times.
Vogue Italia takes risks, stirs
up debate and defines the
spirit of the moment!
